THE REMEDIAL THERAPY COURSE
Remedial Therapies are the most popular and fastest growing area of health care in the world today.
Remedial Therapists work by stimulating the body’s own healing mechanisms through the ‘touch’ therapies and complementary techniques. Remedial Therapists work with their hands using the techniques of massage, trigger point therapy, shiatsu/acupressure along with adjunctive therapies such as hot/cold therapies and aromatherapy to provide pain relief, restoration of mobility and relaxation.
The Remedial Therapy Program at The Australian College of Sports Therapy is the most extensive program of its type and covers a broad range of therapeutic modalities with emphasis on ‘hands on’ practical applications throughout the course. (incorporates Health Training Package Diploma of Remedial Massage HLT50302)
CERTIFICATE IV OF MASSAGE
The Certificate IV in Massage (Relaxation and Sports) teaches skills and knowledge required to practice massage to enhance health and wellbeing. Graduates of the Certificate IV of Massage may articulate directly into the Diploma of Remedial Massage
DIPLOMA OF REMEDIAL MASSAGE
The Diploma of Remedial Massage provides graduates with advanced skills and knowledge required to establish and manage a private practice remedial and therapeutic massage and adjunctive techniques in the treatment and rehabilitation of pain, loss of mobility and injury to the muscles and joints. Graduates of the Diploma of Remedial Massage may articulate directly into the Advanced Diploma of Remedial Massage (Myotherapy).

COURSE OVERVIEW
BUSINESS AND PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
MUSCULOSKELETAL ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
A thorough grounding in anatomy provides the foundation for all studies in clinical science and is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
The structural organisation of the body including an overview of the
interrelationship between the body systems; and descriptive terminology imparts an understanding of this science from a practical and theoretical perspective.
KINESIOLOGY AND BIOMECHANICS
Kinesiology introduces basic mechanical principles of coordinated muscle contraction. By examining and analysing common movement patterns, the mechanisms of common injuries to joint structures and means of injury prevention are presented.
SOFT TISSUE THERAPY
The importance of soft tissue technique in treatment of musculo-skeletal conditions cannot be over-emphasised. Students learn to develop the palpatory skills and knowledge to effectively use proven massage applications in treating patients, including postural and joint assessment. Indications and contra-indications are introduced along with complementary techniques such as muscle stretching, strapping and taping.
Professionalism with regard to confidentiality, ethics, hygiene, therapeutic environment, treatment planning and data recording is covered.
PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF SOFT TISSUE THERAPY
Massage Therapists apply 'hands-on' treatments in dealing with conditions affecting the muscles and associated structures. The Massage Therapist needs to be able to communicate and respond appropriately to other practitioners and understand their role within the health care hierarchy. This module reviews the roles, responsibilities and methodology applied in the wide range of everyday environments. We examine the role of the Massage Therapist in working with problems resulting from work injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and other musculoskeletal/soft tissue injuries and problems.
ADVANCED MYOFASCIAL TECHNIQUES
MOVEMENT SCIENCE
To understand how the body functions in health and mechanisms underlying pain and loss of movement, it is fundamental to study the physiological and biomechanical responses of the body under stress and normal circumstances. This subject explores how the systems of the body particularly the muscular, skeletal, nervous, and circulatory system operate in conjunction to maintain energy levels, stamina, and joint and muscle function.
SPORTS MASSAGE TECHNIQUES
Sports Massage draws on techniques of relaxation, deep tissue, and remedial massage and places the focus on ways and means of treating specific sports injuries that commonly affect athletes. It encompasses preventative massage treatments to stretch and relax vulnerable muscles and joints and following injury provides therapy to restore proper function and return to play.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY
Knowledge and skills in the recognition, evaluation and control of environmental, psychological or ergonomic hazards in the workplace are an important part of client care and rehabilitation. Infection control practice and strategies are an essential part of any profession healthcare practice. This unit imparts knowledge for the sports therapist to address occupational risk factors in the areas of health, hygiene and injury prevention.
SYSTEMIC ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
A thorough grounding in the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the body, systems and organs provides the foundation for all studies in clinical science. How the body operates in functional and dysfunctional states provides part of the underpinning skills and theoretical knowledge essential in client assessment, analysis, treatment implementation and evaluation.
This subject introduces structural organisation, physiological functions and scientific terminology focusing on the inter-relationship between body systems during rest and exercise with emphasis on skeletal, muscular and nervous systems.
PATHOLOGY FOR SOFT TISSUE THERAPIES
Developing an understanding of disease processes, universal precautions and the relationship between disease and myotherapy, the concepts acquired in this module assist the learner with an understanding of the human body, appropriate approach to treatment and/or referral and strategies of infection control practice.
NUTRITION
Nutritional intake has a significant effect on the health and well being of the human organism. This module presents an overview of dietary intake, structure and function of the digestive system and metabolism. Important concepts of micro and macro nutrients, nutritional assessment, eating disorders and nutritional requirements in development, aging and disease are addressed.
ACUPRESSURE AND SHIATSU
Acupressure and Shiatsu are Chinese and Japanese methods of healing that utilise pressure using the fingers or other body parts to influence specific points which have been identified to have an influence on the body's organs, systems and emotional state. These points lie along channels called 'meridians' in which the life forces are said to flow. It is believed that if energy in these channels becomes blocked this may result in pain, discomfort and/or loss of function. This may affect the musculoskeletal system and generally clients seek out practitioners for relief of superficial pain and joint stiffness. Shiatsu and Acupressure are often used in conjunction with other soft tissue therapy techniques. The effects of the treatment are generally experienced as relaxation along with a sense of well-being.
ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT MANAGEMENT
In sports therapy practice, each client presents with their unique history and presenting symptoms. Before proceeding with any treatment it is essential to ascertain specific information about their condition using questioning, palpation, physical examination and orthopaedic and neurological tests. Once test findings are correlated with information gathered, the practitioner can most effectively assist the client. This subject provides an opportunity for the senior student to hone their assessment skills and apply foundation knowledge, formulating effective treatment plans.
FIRST AID TRAUMA AND EMERGENCY SUPPORT
In an emergency situation it is essential that every practitioner be able to provide essential First Aid until trained medical assistance is available. This module teaches the principles and practical knowledge to Level 2 First Aid in the Workplace Certificate (Royal Lifesaving Senior First Aid).

PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF SOFT TISSUE THERAPY
Musculoskeletal Therapy is a rapidly growing profession that addresses problems that affect a large number of people in the population. Some of the most common problems that contribute to absence from work, dependence of medications for pain relief, and on going care by a variety of health professionals stem from the musculoskeletal system. The Myotherapist is a primary practitioner who specialises in conditions affecting the muscles, joints and soft tissues of the body. The Myotherapist works in conjunction with medical, chiropractic, physiotherapy and other practitioners and needs to be able to communicate, liaise, refer, and respond appropriately to other practitioners and stake holders with respect to addressing issues of injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, performance enhancement and optimization, improved mobility and fitness as well as health education in the areas of wellbeing and longevity. This module reviews the roles, responsibilities and methodology applied in
the wide range of everyday environments. We examine the role of the Myotherapist in working with problems resulting from work injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and other musculoskeletal/soft tissue injuries and problems.

AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy is the introduction of essential oils derived from flowers and shrubs into the therapeutic environment. It is often employed as an additive to massage oils or dispersed into the air using a special oil burner. Each particular essential oil is said to produce unique effects on the emotion and physiological state of the client. They may be massaged into the skin or worn like a perfume. Aromatherapy can be an effective adjunct to massage therapy and enhances the healing response in many cases. Aromatherapy can have a relaxing effect and depending upon the oils used are said to have a therapeutic influence on a wide range of health conditions. Various oils have been shown to stimulate, balance, uplift, soothe and calm resulting in release of stress and tension restoring the body's own healing process.
